Mussels

Mussels are found along the Pacific Ocean coastline of Lima, Arequipa, ICA, and La Libertad. These shellfish are packed with proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and zinc, making them highly nutritious. Their high iron content is particularly beneficial in treating anemia and boosting energy levels.

However, mussels can be susceptible to contamination from toxins if not sourced from clean, reliable waters. It’s essential to ensure that mussels are fresh and harvested from non-polluted areas to avoid health risks associated with toxins.

  1. Prepare the Mussels: Clean the mussels thoroughly, removing any beards. Steam the mussels in a pot with a little water until they open, about 5-7 minutes. Discard any mussels that do not open.
  2. Make the Ceviche: Once the mussels are cool enough to handle, remove them from their shells and set aside.
  3. Mix the Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the mussels, red onion, lime juice, ají amarillo (if using), and cilantro. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Serve: Arrange the ceviche on a plate alongside the boiled corn kernels and sweet potato slices for a classic Peruvian touch
